Dear Friends of Alaska Seeds of Change –
You may have noticed some changes around here over the last couple of weeks. We are experiencing a maintenance issue that is limiting our ability to operate in our indoor growing space. The problem has been building for a while, and to fix it, we need to tear down the entire ceiling, so we’ll need to stop all growing operations in that space.
We are NOT stopping programming! Our staff have adapted quickly to continue providing hands-on vocational training for our youth participants. We are (or will soon be) utilizing unaffected work room spaces in our building, some space in the building next door (home of the POWER Center), outdoor spaces (in the spring and summer), and are planning a series of “field day” remote work experiences for youth. We are developing materials for class trips where we bring lessons to classrooms while we are unable to host class field trips at our building.
We have paused vocational drop-in hours for now and are postponing our annual “Birthday Bash” celebration until the summer (and are moving it outside to enjoy our outdoor gardens!)
As we like to say around here, we are Alaska Seeds of Change, not Alaska Seeds of Stay the Same so we are embracing this opportunity to try new ways of operating.
We’ll soon be ready to welcome volunteers back to help us with growing and programming, and we look forward to seeing you at our annual celebration outdoors in early August! (Look for more details soon.)
Thank you for your on-going support of Alaska Seeds of Change!
Sincerely,
Sara Renard, Program Manager
Jessica Cochran, Director of Community Relations
